    Known for its distinct bergamot aroma, Earl Grey tea has become firmly ensconced as an afternoon tea classic. Our Smoky Earl Grey offers a refreshingly different blend that pays homage to its roots of Lapsang Souchong, a speciality of China’s Fujian Province, a smooth black tea smoked over resin-sweet pinewood. A cup where dark and rich flavours meet fragrant citrus for a surprising partnership that is sure to become a firm favourite.

The key component of this blend, Lapsang Souchong, had an unusual journey to British shores, travelling by the hands of the crown. We’ve numbered this tea after the year 1662, when Princess Catherine, who had long fallen in love with its unique taste, introduced it to Britain’s Royal Family.


Ever since our founder Walter Whittard weighed out tea leaves behind his high mahogany counter, we've been experimenting with our own inventive blends. Today you'll find extraordinary creativity in our collection, from unique twists on classics like English Breakfast to more inventive blends laden with fruit and flowers.

How to Make

1 tsp (2g) loose tea

200ml water

  1. Pop 1 tsp of loose tea per cup into a Pao mug or teapot with an infuser.
  2. Pour in 200ml water per cup boiled to 100 degrees
  3. Wait for 3-5 minutes
  4. Remove infuser and enjoy.

2 tsp (4g) loose tea

100ml freshly boiled water


Fruit or mint to garnish (optional)

  1. Add the loose tea to a refillable teabag or an infuser and place in a cup or heat-resistant glass.
  2. Pour over freshly boiled water and leave for 15 minutes. Remove the infuser.
  3. Top up with plenty of ice.
  4. Garnish with fruit and sprigs of mint if desired.
