Additional Information

A nutty Japanese "popcorn" concoction: steamed loose leaf green tea layered with popped pieces of toasted rice.

Vegan SuitableVegetarian

  • Full Description

When Japanese farmers first tried the trick of adding toasted rice to their tea, they soon realised that the springlike taste of steamed green tea was a surprisingly good match for crispy, roasted flavours. Popped pieces of toasted rice give the appearance of popcorn, and Genmaicha tends to be a hit with anyone fond of the slightly savoury taste the Japanese call “umami”.

We'd recommend trying our loose leaf Genmaicha with a handful of toasted pumpkin and sunflower seeds – ideal as a flavoursome energy boost.

JAPAN

Tea was first introduced to Japan around the turn of the first millennium, and since then it's become much more than just a drink: chado or "the way of tea" is a fine art for the Japanese that takes a lifetime to master. Today Japan is famous for its lush, verdant green tea, thanks to a process of steaming the leaves.

Store in a sealed jar or tin, such as our Fill-Me-Up Tea Caddies.
