Whittard of Chelsea Coffee Beans

Coffee Grind Types

Fine...medium...coarse... Does it really matter if you use a coffee grind that's not designed for your equipment? Yes! It's the difference between an unpleasant, tasteless brew and a clean, flavoursome one.

A precise, consistent grind will extract the perfect amount of flavour from your coffee. Under-extracted coffee grounds produce a sour, acidic and salty coffee and over-extracted grounds, a bitter, flavourless cup.

As a rule of thumb, the longer the coffee is in contact with the water, the coarser the grind should be to avoid over-extraction. Take a cafetière, this method involves fully immersing the coffee throughout the brew time, so a larger, coarse grind is needed.
