A history of the tea caddy.

Step 01

17th Century

The caddy arrives in England.

A pivotal moment in British culture: China brought tea to England in the 1600s. The tea would often be sold with Chinese porcelain caddies, and was mostly available to drink in coffeehouses.

Step 02

18th - 19th Century

Ornate designs for high society.

The wealthier echelons of society began to purchase tea for their households. Craftsman were commissioned to create ornate, lockable caddies from wood, metal or even tortoiseshell – keen to keep this most precious substance safe.
