Origin: South Africa Leaf Type: Rooibos Taste: Sweet and slightly malty Drink: Black or with milk and sugar to taste Brew: 3-5 minutes according to taste When to drink: As a refreshing caffeine-free drink any time of day
Rooibos is a great-tasting, caffeine-free alternative to traditional black tea. Low in tannin, it is a hugely popular tea, drunk for its alleged health benefits as well as its individual flavor.
Rooibos (literally meaning 'Redbush' in Afrikaans) grows only in the Cederberg mountain area of South Africa, on small shrubby bushes that produce its green, needle like leaves. When fermented, the leaves turn red, making a rich-colored full-bodied tea. Whittard's Rooibos tea was loved by the Great Taste Awards judges, who described it as "Mellow and rewarding."
